About this project

We were brought in to carry out bitumen removal at a school in York, preparing the existing concrete floor for a new resin-based system. The first stage involved mechanical grinding with specialist diamond equipment to remove the old bitumen and expose a clean, sound substrate. The floor was then thoroughly vacuumed to remove dust, loose material and contaminants. Effective substrate preparation was particularly important on this project, as the existing bitumen needed to be removed before the new system could be installed successfully.

Once the floor had been prepared, an epoxy DPM was applied followed by a quartz scatter to provide the required surface profile and mechanical key. After curing, a self-smoothing compound was installed to create a level, consistent surface ready for the next flooring stage. As an experienced resin flooring contractor, we used specialist equipment throughout the project, including a three-phase diamond grinder and industrial dust extraction. The work was completed in stages, allowing sufficient curing time between applications, with the overall programme dependent on the condition of the existing floor and the preparation required.

Our floor preparation process is designed to leave the substrate clean, stable and ready for the specified flooring system. For this project, careful bitumen removal, dust extraction, epoxy DPM application, quartz scatter and self-smoothing compound provided the necessary foundation for the finished floor.
