Bitumen removal – Lewisham – 270㎡

We recently carried out 270㎡ of specialist bitumen removal at a school cricket pavilion in Lewisham, South London. The existing bitumen was mechanically removed using diamond grinding, providing a clean and properly prepared substrate ready for the next stage of the flooring installation. As part of our floor preparation service, we use professional diamond grinding and other mechanical preparation methods to remove bitumen, old coatings, adhesives, laitance and other contaminants that can prevent new flooring from bonding correctly.

Once the bitumen had been removed and the substrate was suitably prepared, Mapei primer was applied before approximately 350 bags of Mapei deep-fill self-levelling compound were installed. This created a smooth, level surface ready for the floor layers to install the final 5mm Amtico floor covering. The preparation and levelling work was completed within approximately 1–2 days, with careful attention given to the condition of the existing substrate throughout the process. Specialist bitumen and floor preparation

Removing bitumen is often an essential part of preparing a floor for a new covering. Bitumen, dust, grease, old adhesives, paint and previous floor treatments can all interfere with adhesion, so the substrate needs to be clean, sound and suitably prepared before the next flooring system is installed. For this Lewisham project, diamond grinding provided an effective method of removing the existing bitumen across the 270㎡ area while preparing the surface for the Mapei primer and self-levelling compound.
