Reasons to use floor screed

Floor screed is a layer of material, usually sand and cement, applied over a concrete subfloor to create a smooth, level surface for final floor coverings like tiles, carpets, or wood. It serves both functional and aesthetic purposes. It also enhances the strength and durability of the floor. Common reasons to use floor screed:

  • Leveling: To correct uneven subfloors and provide a flat surface for floor finishes.
  • Protection: It protects underlying pipes and electrical systems embedded in the floor.
  • Insulation: Floor screed can improve thermal insulation, especially in underfloor heating systems.
  • Durability: It adds an additional layer of strength and stability to the floor structure.
  • Smooth finish: Provides a smooth and even surface, which is ideal for laying final floor coverings.

Floor screed options

There are several types of floor screeds available, depending on the specific requirements of the project:

  • Traditional Sand and Cement Screed: A mix of sand, cement, and water, typically used for general-purpose floor leveling and filling.
  • Liquid Screed (Flowing Screed): This is a self-leveling screed made from anhydrite or cement-based compounds, ideal for underfloor heating as it flows around pipes and offers better heat conductivity.
  • Fast-drying Screed: Specially formulated to dry quickly, allowing quicker installation of the final flooring. This is useful for projects with tight timelines.
  • Floating Screed: A screed layer laid over insulation or soundproofing material, often used with underfloor heating systems.

What is Screed ?

Q: What is Screed ?

Answer: A layer of material (often, but not always cementitious) applied to a floor, to create a level surface.

Why are screeds used ?

Q: Why are screeds used ?

Answer:

  1. To provide a perfectly flat surface for fitting additional floor surfaces ( ie. preparing for fixed floor coverings such as, carpet , LVT flooring, floor tiles or engineered flooring )
  2. For underfloor heating ( UFH ) ( Screeds encase underfloor heating pipes, creating a fantastic medium for absorbing and then radiating heat )
  3. As a finished floor in itself

Where can screeds be laid ?

Q: Where can screeds be laid ?

Answer:

  1. Over a pre-existing concrete base
  2. Over a DPM ( damp proof membrane )
  3. Over insulation

What does a floor screeding contractor do ?

Q: What does a screeding contractor do ?

Answer:

Whilst the roles of the electrician, bricklayer, plumber, plasterer, roofer need little explanation, the professional role of the the screening contractor is commonly misunderstood.

Traditionally, a screener would level a surface with a straight edge using a back & forth motion while moving across the surface.

As the tools and materials for screeding have evolved, so has the role of the screeder.

  • Planning & consultation

Discuss proposed usage of floor, performance and therefore requirements for the actual screed materials, compressive strength (Nmm2), mix design, screed depth/thickness and curing times. ( We can help with all of this )

In addition, a screeding contractor needs to consider many other factors, including physical and mechanical properties, strength, wear resistance, surface properties, hardness, acoustic performance, thermal and chemical resistance.

  • Site / surface preparation

Using a laser, a thorough survey of the site is carried out

  • Screed is mixed & laid

Screed is generally mixed at site in a mixer pump with a series of heavy duty extension hoses, however liquid screeds ( non cementitious anhydrite / calcium sulphate based ) are supplied ready mixed to the site.
